Fort Frances Museum exhibit focuses on residential schools


The Fort Frances Museum will host an exhibition, “Ontario Residential Schools: Our Story,” on the history and impact of the Canadian Government’s First Nations Residential School program.
The exhibition includes a traveling exhibit from Red Lake Museum, which focuses on the Red Lake and Pelican Lake schools. An additional exhibit, representing the local Fort Frances schools, will also be on display.

Thumbs up to the Ranier City Council for taking issues concerning the international railroad bridge to Canadian National Railroad. The council wants CN to consider leaving the lift bridge in the up position when not in use. The reasons are for boater safety, such as if a boat’s engine stalled in the rapids it could collide with the bridge. It is also national security issue to avoid possible illegal crossings in or out of the country.

Local boy participates in special hockey game, By JOE KRAUSE, Sports Editor


Like most 10 year olds in International Falls, Remington Veillieux loves to play sports. His favorite sport is hockey, but a rare condition has forced him to watch from behind the boards.
Remington is the son of Sherry and Ken Veillieux of the Falls and was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at a young age. Remington had back surgery when he was nine months old to help combat the disorder. Hydrocephalus or hydrocephaly is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain. The fluid is often under increased pressure and can compress and damage the brain.

Toni Rae Everett, International Falls, and Colin Runo Korpi, International Falls, along with daughter Karsen and son Kaden, announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.
The bride-to-be is the daughter of Jack and Loral Lee Everett, International Falls.
Parents of the groom-elect are Runo Korpi and Elsie Korpi, both of International Falls.
Toni is a 1997 graduate of Falls High School and is a home-based day care provider in the Falls.
Colin is a 1992 graduate of Falls High School and is employed at Super Valu.

Calling all dogs, By FAYE WHITBECK, Staff Writer


Ranier Centennial Festival to feature ‘dog unit’ in parade celebration
Chairwoman Diane Edens recently notified the Ranier Centennial Festival committee of a concern that people have reportedly been stealing dog tags off Ranier dogs in order to make their dogs eligible for Ranier’s upcoming centennial parade.
In an attempt to thwart this deception, Naomi Woods who is organizing the special “dog unit” for the parade, wants to notify all Borderland dog owners that temporary citizenship will be offered to any area dogs that want to be in the parade.

County jails face cuts in payments


Koochiching should feel no impact
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Metro-area counties say they’ll soon have to pay more to house short-term state prisoners in their county jails, partly due to expected cuts in payments from the state.
In the past year, Koochiching County has not had as many short-term offenders in custody, according to jail administrator Florence Hervey. She said she believes the cuts in reimbursements from the state for prisoners in the county jail are not affecting Koochiching County.

Camryn was welcomed home by brothers Riley, Logan and Adam Rasmussen.
Maternal grandparents are the late George Bigler and the late Carol Oustad.
Paternal grandparents are Gary and Deanna Rasmussen.
Great-grandparents are Pete and Gretchen Morgan.

Frank Leo Frederickson was named to the dean’s list of the Institute of Technology for superior academic performance during spring quarter.
25 YEARS AGO
Kami Cayou graduated from Bemidji State University at conclusion of spring quarter with an associate of science degree, accounting technology.

Summer Reading winding down


Summer Reading continues but has begun to wind down.
Next Thursday, July 31, is the last day to turn in hours to qualify for a free summer reading t-shirt. Ten hours of reading and listening are needed to get a t-shirt. So, if your child hasn’t quite got their reading done, now would be a good time to encourage them to get back to it so they can qualify for a t-shirt. Turn in hours read, for books through the end of August.
